Namibia: Teenager Dies in Crash

Walvis Bay — A 14-year-old girl died on Saturday when a taxi, on which she was a passenger, collided head-on with an Isuzu pick-up between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

The incident happened at around 17h50.

It is alleged that the driver of the Isuzu, who had no driver's licence, was given the vehicle to wash but decided to go on a joyride to Swakopmund with friends.

On the way, he attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an oncoming V/W Golf taxi.

It is reported that the suspect, Walter Kutz (24), was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

There were six passengers in each vehicle. The girl died on the spot. The other 11 people sustained minor to serious injuries.

Kutz was arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide, drunk driving, as well as driving without a driver's licence.

He has since appeared in Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court, where he was released upon paying bail of N$4000. His case was postponed to October 28.

Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Festus Shilongo, said the region has been quiet for the past few months because of increased police presence on the roads and a campaign against over-speeding.

He urged drivers to respect other road users, as well as road signs.
