Ghana: TMA Day Care Center Marks 50th Anniversary

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) Day Care Center, last Friday, celebrated its Golden Jubilee anniversary at the forecourt of the Assembly, amidst the recital of poems and a cultural display among other entertainment from the 'twinkle twinkle little stars'.

All manner of persons from across the Tema Metropolis, including some old pupils of the Day Care Center, like Mr. Robert Kempes Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tema West constituency, Naa Torshie Addo, and Esther Sintim-Missah, an Assembly Member, were present to grace the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the TMA boss said that the school had stood the test of time in the educational delivery system over the years, even in the face of stiff competition from other privately-owned day care centers, adding that it was only proper that those who contributed in diverse ways to the success of the school be acknowledged.

The MCE congratulated the staff of the school for their hard work, and entreated them to continue to inculcate in the children a sound moral and character so that they can become responsibly adults.

'I have no doubt in my mind that the sound training given to these kids is what has served, and continues to serve, as the moral tonic that would live long in their minds, and for the rest of their lives,' he said.

According to the MCE, it was the responsibility of the assembly to make sure that it recognises sound education, and lay the proper foundation, starting from pre-school education.

He expressed worry that the training given by some caregivers in day care centers and kindergarten across the country are sub standard, citing the recent revelation from the Osu Children's Home as an example.

He donated a cash amount of GH ¢500 to the school for maintenance.

The Superintendent of the TMA Day Care Centre, Ms. Agnes Biraah, said the school was established 50 years ago to give support to parents who were then engaged by the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to help construct the Tema Port.

'Six Nursery/Day Care units were established Â- three in Community One (1) and three in Community Two (2),' Ms. Biraah stated.

She appealed to the management of the TMA to consider adding a classroom each to the existing nursery blocks, saying when this was done, it would allow for the free movement of nursery attachments to attend to children who may require attention, even when they are having siesta.
