Windhoek — A six-to-nine-seconds earth tremor was felt in Windhoek, a few minutes after 16h00 yesterday.
According to the Director of the Geological Survey in the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Dr Gabi Schneider, the tremor was felt mostly in the southern parts of the city, although some people in areas such as Wanaheda and Katutura also reported the tremor.
Schneider said they could not as yet say how strong or where the epicenter of the tremor was, as they have to wait for data to come in from seismic stations.
"It happened late afternoon so we have to wait for the data and analyse it before we can issue statements," she said.
Pieter Mietzner, a resident of Hochland Park's Pelican Street felt the tremor at his house.
"It seemed like a percussion. It rattled some of the crockery in the house," he said.
"It was just shaking, shaking, we thought it was thunder," was the response of Gift Inambao, a Khomasdal resident.
People in some parts of Otjomuise also felt the tremor, although some thought it was dynamite used by constructors at the building site in Otjomuise where a police station is being built.
"I felt vibration and rumbling, but I thought it was thunder," said a New Era employee, who was at office at the time.
Another resident in the town centre, around the TransNamib area, thought some people were running upstairs in the building.
Radio listeners in Windhoek reportedly phoned in at some stations to share news about the tremor.
Earthquakes, or even tremors, are not common occurrences in Namibia, thus people do not immediately suspect the possibility of an earthquake or tremor.
Windhoek reportedly lies on a fault line, thus tremors in the city are allegedly not that uncommon.
Previous tremors were felt in Eros and Klein Windhoek.
Windhoek has two seismic stations, while other stations can be found in Tsumeb, Aranos, Aus, Ariamsvlei, Kamanjab, Opuwo and Rundu.
