Nigeria: We Will Go to Court If You Run - Turaki Vanguard Tells Jonathan

Turaki Vanguard, a political organization championing the Presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan not to run for the country's presidency so as not to undermine the Peoples Democratic Party's principle of zoning.

The group's National Publicity Secretary, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze stated this, Wednesday, while briefing journalists in Yola warning that if President Jonathan succumbs to the pressure from mischief makers and undemocratic elements, the Turaki Vanguard would have no option than to sue him to court.

"We expect President Jonathan to exclude himself from the PDP primaries, but if he insists on running for the presidency, then we will take him to court for breach of trust and violation of the zoning principle that ushered him into office" Eze affirmed.

Eze stated that, "As far as we are concerned, President Jonathan is not an aspirant to the country's presidential seat come 2011. We are insisting that he should not contemplate such a thing considering his office as an incumbent President. It will be a national embarrassment if a serving President goes to the party's primaries and fails to pick the party's ticket".

The National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki Vanguard explained that former President Olusegun Obasanjo became a civilian ruler in 1999 based on the grand design to appease the south over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election believed to have been won by the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola.

Based on the above assertion, Eze noted that "the only right and patriotic thing for President Jonathan to do is to forget the 2011 presidency to pave the way for a Northerner" adding that by so doing, "the North would have been appeased to finish its tenure following demise of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

"Principle of zoning must be respected by President Goodluck Jonathan because it is the process that brought him into power. The constitution of the PDP is very clear and unambigous in that regard; so we expect Mr. President to follow the path of honour and dignity to jettison the few undemocratic forces trying to lure him in the 2011 presidential race," Eze insisted.

He explained that going by the PDP's constitution, the party's presidential contestant would be sponsored by the party, and argued that since the PDP has remained resolute in its position to ensure that the principle of zoning holds sway, it behooves on Mr. President to read the hand writing on the wall.

"Look, for one to be a contestant to the presidency in particular under the PDP plat form, one has to receive the endorsement of the PDP, and as far as the party is concerned, the principle of zoning should be maintained, and we expect the President to abide by that simple principle" the Turaki Vanguard's spokes person added.

While commending the National Chairman of the PDP, Okwesilieze Nwodo for ensuring the return of genuine internal democracy into the party, the Turaki Vanguard however thumbed up for the entire party hierarchy for granting Atiku a waiver to contest the 2011 presidential election.

Eze observed that the granting of waiver to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has lent credence to their belief that the PDP has finally returned to democratic ways of doing things as against the politics of exclusion witnessed in the recent past.

He also thanked Senator Jibril Aminu, business mogul cum politician Bamangar Tukur and other elder statesmen from Adamawa state for solidly standing by Atiku to ensure that he got the PDP's waiver, and urged upcoming politicians in the state to note that politics is not all about personal interest but a collective thing.

It is sad that the North which has produced over 8 presidents and ruled the country for over 38 years continues to emphasize claim to power on the basis of zoning. The President has the constitutional right to contest the elections.

The continued calls for the respect of the zoning arrangment remind the nation that the very region that annulled what was widely acclaimed as the fairest presidential election is not even repentant. It is in the interest of the Nation to see President Goodluck as a Nigerian first and foremost, and not to condemn him because he is not from the North. Instrumentalizing ethnicism is not in the interest of the Nation right now. Mr Eze is one of those Igbomen who would always want the Igbos and the rest of the Country to remain the underdogs to the North. It's a pity. It would be noble if the Northerners understand that they have had more than a fair share in ruling Nigeria and in using its resources for the exclusive development of the North. Accepting the other parts of the country have the legitimate rights to vie for and produce a president is national integration is all about. Please let's give that man a chance.

    Thank you
