Africa: Participants Score Country's Facilities and Organisational Skills

Abuja — As the 1st edition of the ECOWAS Games comes to an end this Sunday, participating countries have scored facilities and level of organisation put up by Nigeria for the games high.

Moumounic Amadou, the general director of sports of Niger Republic, said, although, some problems were spotted, the organisation and facilities are quite good. "Any problem identified now is associated with any pilot program and would be addressed in subsequent editions."

Also reacting to the games, the director of technical, Elias Gora, said since the ECOWAS U-23 games is the maiden edition, there is no yardstick to measure the performance of athletes and the games. "You can not rate the games high or low since it is the first edition. All the same, the games are going on as planned and all the participating countries are very happy with the level of organisation. By record, Nigeria is dominating the games and this is expected of a host country because of the number of games and athletes registered for each event. When a country hosts any competition, they strive to win. That is exactly what Nigeria wants to achieve. When USA hosted the Olympic Games twice, they won them. It is the level of preparation that makes them perform well which is the case with Nigeria.'

Gora said the technical planning, accommodation, transportation, and security, among others are working according to plans. "So far, we have not received any complaint from any country. All the athletes and officials are happy. Nigeria has been able to provide good technical officials and there has been no report of bad officiating. The technical personnel have been rated among the best."

Gora added that the IAAF representatives in Africa sent their officials to inspect all the facilities and evaluated them. "The presidents of Africa volleyball federation, handball, traditional sports and wrestling federations are here monitoring and evaluating the games. Only the Africa Athletes Federation president is not here but represented by the federation's high level officials.'

Meanwhile, athletics activities commenced yesterday with the director of technical saying the finals of relay and 100 metres will take place on Sunday, while traditional wrestling also kicked off yesterday with the final to hold on Sunday.

Nigeria led in handball men event with 4 points while in the female category, she is on top with 6 points with the finals to be decided tomorrow. Volleyball men event saw Sierra Leone walking over Ghana, while Nigeria defeated Benin Republic 3-0 in the women's category.
