Eritrea: Inhabitants of Anseba Region Voice Commitment to Promote Irrigation Farming

Keren — The inhabitants of various areas in Anseba region voiced commitment to actively engage in irrigation farming as the existing micro-dams and water reservoirs have impounded sufficient amount of water in this year's rainy season.

They explained that almost all water sources have accumulated satisfactory volume of water thanks to the vigorous endeavors and the good rainy season, and asserted that they would redouble efforts to boost fruits and vegetable farming, and thereby improve their living standard and stabilize the market.

The local inhabitants further stated that previously they used to encounter acute water shortage due to the absence of water infrastructure facilities. At present, however, the necessary water storage facilities have been put in place in different parts of the region that enabled them not only to get access to potable water supply but also promote irrigation farming, they elaborated.

Reports indicated that a number of micro-dams and water reservoirs have been constructed in the region which are playing significant role in easing potable water supply problem and enriching underground water resource.
