Uganda: Villa Blocks Odongkara Move to Express

Kampala — Express FC's ambitions to secure Cranes second choice goalkeeper Robert Odongkara have aborted as his club SC Villa are not willing to do business with them.

Express was to unveil Odongkara to the fans on Saturday but said yesterday that they have since changed their priorities to sign strikers Crizestom Ntambi from Villa and Tonny Odur from champions Bunamwaya, defenders Godfrey Kavulu and Willy Kavuma (KCC).

The Red Eagles also revealed they parted ways with their long time team captain Badru Kiyega after the 32-year-old player turned down a new appointment as a technical staff.

"The league is going to be very competitive and you need young players. Besides we are grooming players with ambitions to play for national teams. After six years, he (Kiyega) refused an elevation and he has no ambitions to play beyond the club," team manager Mahmoud Kateregga explained.

At URA, the taxmen's team reversed their stand on Cranes winger Stephen Bengo and issued the player a two-year contract at an undisclosed fee.

Coach Alex Isabirye had earlier said that they were not interested in Bengo, who was laid off at Yanga in Tanzania.

Isabirye also said they had agreed terms with Cranes home based team captain Simeon Masaba to sign a two year contract. But the defender denied any links with the 2007 champions saying he wants to play abroad. The league kicks off on October 17.

Meanwhile, Cranes striker Sula Matovu is on his way to joining Egyptian league side Zamalek, his current side Proline said.

Proline boss Mujib Kasule said they were due to start negotiations after Zamalek have confirmed that Matovu meets their requirements.
