Nigeria: Flamingoes Charged to Lift Fifa U-17 Trophy

Former Super Falcons captain, Coach Eucharia Uche, has charged the Flamingoes to go ahead and lift the FIFA U-17 trophy saying the recent impressive performances of the Falconets and the Flamingoes at World Championships are enough indications that the future of Nigerian female football is really bright.

Speaking to Trustsports yesterday on the performances of the Flamingoes at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, the former Super Falcons handler said the performances of the team is well deserved because it is a result of hard work and commitment.

Coach Uche said what the Falconets achieved in Germany did not come to her as a surprise just as the excellent performances of the Flamingoes is not a surprise considering the fact that those assigned the responsibility of handling the female national teams have remained very much committed.

The former international said since the time female football was recognized by the country's football authorities, female national teams, beginning with the Super Falcons who have dominated African women football, to the Falconets and now the Flamingoes have never disappointed.

According to the female football coach, female football will continue to wax stronger even as the desired attention is always lacking on the part of those entrusted with the administration of the sport in the country.

Her words: "The performances of Flamingoes have not come to me as a surprise. It is a result of hard work and commitment on the part of the players and their coaches. It is well deserved and more of such performances will continue to come from other female national teams.

"I want to tell you that female football has always done well since its inception in Nigeria. Super Falcons have attended all FIFA organized Women World Cups and won almost every edition of the Africa Women Nations Cup. The national U-20 and U-17 have followed suit and this is good for Nigerian female football.

Coach Uche maintained that if commensurate attention is paid to women football in the country, the sky will be the beginning of the excellent results that would be posted by the national football teams.

She reiterated that most of what has been achieved so far by female football players has been as a result of personal commitment and dint of luck as she said there have been no conscientious efforts by authorities to develop the sport among women.

Uche therefore called on the Flamingoes not to become complacent but re-double their efforts as they strive to win the FIFA U-17 trophy for Nigeria and Africa.
