South Africa: Bosses 'Lied About Deal' With Motor Industry Workers

Johannesburg — THE National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) yesterday denied claims the second motor industry strike this year had ended, saying employers had lied to the public about an amicable agreement.

Numsa spokesman Castro Ngobese said the Retailers Motor Industry (RMI) and Fuel Retailers Association had claimed the strike had been called off, after the parties had agreed to a supposed 8,5% pay rise. He said workers had been sent cellphone text messages by management and "the employers' boyfriends and girlfriends", telling them the strike was over and that they needed to return to work.
