South Africa: Deal Expected in Pioneer Price-Fixing Fine

Johannesburg — THE Competition Commission was to ask an appeal court today to raise a R195,7m fine the Competition Tribunal imposed on Pioneer Foods earlier this year over its role in bread price-fixing.

Late yesterday, however, it was unclear whether the Competition Appeal Court hearing would go ahead. Both parties - also in talks about Pioneer's alleged role in collusion over maize milling - were tightlipped, but the possibility remained of the two sides reaching an agreement that settled all outstanding issues.
