Windhoek — Loved him or not, Johannes Smith was one of Namibia's foremost fighters of press freedom and freedom of expression and was known for his anti-establishment journalism that brought him at loggerheads with both the occupying apartheid South African administration and the post-independent government in Namibia.
Johannes Smith - or Smittie as he was affectionately known - was born on March 17, 1933 at Grootfontein from Angolan Afrikaners the 'dorsland trekkers' (thirstlanders).
