Uganda: Forestry Authority Takes Tree Planting Campaign to Bududa

Bududa — In a bid to fight the increasing consequences of environmental degradation in the Bududa, the National Forestry Authority has launched a tree-planting campaign. Speaking during the launch of the campaign on Saturday at Bushibokoro Sub-county headquarters, the Minister for Water and Environment, Ms Maria Mutagamba, said the Mt Elgon area has experienced consistent deforestation over the last three decades due to the fast growing population.

"Deforestation has deprived the Mt. Elgon sub-region of vital indigenous trees that hold water and soil. Consequently, many parts of this area are bare today and prone to strong winds, soil erosion and deadly landslides," Ms Mutagamba said. During the launch 50,000 indigenous trees were planted.
