South Africa: Pouring Scorn is No Substitute for Good Analysis

Johannesburg — DENOUNCING the African National Congress (ANC) rather than trying to understand it may be satisfying to many commentators. But it makes us miss much that is important in our politics.

It is not clear why pouring scorn on the ruling party now often substitutes for analysing it. Perhaps it is a symptom of the post-World Cup national mood: for a while, those who shape our national debate have been acting like people who were forced to behave well in front of visitors for too long and are now letting out all of their bottled up animosities. But, whatever the cause, more is happening within the ANC than the scrabbling for resources by greedy power- holders of which we are constantly warned.
