Gambia: Trafficking in Persons Amendment Bill Ratified

Members of the National Assembly Monday unanimously ratified the Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Bill, with Section 28 of the Principal Act amended and Sub-Section (4) by substituting the word 'Fifteen', with the word 'Fifty' and in Sub-Section (5) by substituting the word 'Life Imprisonment' with the words 'Sentenced to Death'.

The bill seeks to enhance the penalties attached to trafficking in persons in order to protect vulnerable persons who are invariably the victims of such despicable practice. Edward Gomez, the Attorney General and minister of Justice tabled the bill for amendment before the House. In this submission, Minister Gomez said the problem of trafficking in persons has now become a global concern. "It is an undisputable fact that almost everyday innocent children are being used as child soldiers," he lamented.
