Gambia: National Assembly Pass Bill to Stiffen Penalty for Trafficking in Persons

The National Assembly on Monday 4 October passed The Trafficking In Persons (Amendment) Bill 2010 which is designed to introduce stiffer penalties for persons convicted of trafficking in person.

The law as it stands is that a person who is convicted of trafficking in persons is liable to a fine of between D50,000 and D500,000 in addition to imprisonment for at least fifteen years and a maximum of life imprisonment. Now the Bills seek to increase the minimum penalty to fifty years from fifteen years. The maximum imprisonment will still remain life imprisonment and the fines will still be the same.
