Nigeria: Advisory - Adoke to Farida - Keep Out of Politics

The advisory posted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] on its website advising political parties not to field for election anyone who is standing trial for corruption-related offences yesterday attracted the ire of Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, who cautioned the EFCC chairman Mrs. Farida Waziri regarding statements credited to her about the disqualification of politicians accused of corruption.

In a letter to the EFCC chair (Ref No. HAGF/EFCC/2010/Vol. 1/10), dated 24th October, 2010 and entitled 'Re: Incessant Political Statements Capable of Embarrassing the Federal Government of Nigeria and Unduly Heating Up the Polity', the AGF stated, "My attention has been drawn to recent disturbing reports of political statements credited to the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which are capable of embarrassing the government and unduly heating up the polity.
