Nigeria: Chad - FG Commits N1.65 Billion to Desert Encroachment

Abuja — President Goodluck Jonathan has said in the past two years, Nigeria completed its contribution of N1.65 billion to ensure that the shrinking Lake Chad which has reduced from its original size of 250,000 square kilometres to just 25,000 square kilometres was arrested.

Of the $6 million needed for the feasibility studies of how to save the Lake, he disclosed that Nigeria paid $5 million for the inter water transfer from Bangui River in Central Africa to Lake Chad to save the over 20 million dependants on its resources.
