Nigeria: Increasing Electricity Tariff Makes No Economic Sense

In what appears to be akin to putting the cart before the horse, the power regulatory authorities plan to increase electricity consumption tariff early next year, long before the hoped-for increase and stability in supply.

According to the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the increase in tariff will take effect in January 2011. Giving details of the proposal, NERC's sole administrator, Mr Imamudeen Talba, blamed the Federal Government for reneging on the payment of the balance of subsidy to the organization, prompting the planned increase to make up for the resulting shortfall.
