Uganda: Forest Authority, the Police Must Stay Alert During Elections

PEOPLE in many areas exploit the election period to encroach on forests. The most serious encroachments on our forest reserves have mainly taken place either just before or during the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections.

During election time, the encroachers know that political leaders will not intervene to protect forests. Political leaders are usually pre-occupied with their campaigns for re-election and avoid antagonising people in order not to lose votes.
