Tanzania: Police Beat, Lock Up MP in Mayoral Poll Chaos

Police yesterday beat up Arusha Urban MP Godbless Lema during the town's chaotic mayoral elections.

The officers punched and arrested the 33-year-old MP inside the City Hall, where the elections were being held. Mr Lema had allegedly defied an order by the newly-elected mayor, Mr Gaudence Lyimo, to get out of the building. Mr Lyimo is a member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
