TANZANIA Distilleries Limited (TDL) has launched a new wine that will use locally grown grapes from Dodoma.
The two brands - Dodoma and Imagi were launched in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday evening. TDL Brand Manager, Ms Martha Bangu said at the launch that the idea to use local materials aims to empower the famers.
"It will not only provide the farmers with ready market for their produce but their income will be improved, henceforth their living standards," she said.
According to her, the move goes in tandem with the objectives of the 'Kilimo Kwanza,' which aims to transforming agriculture into a modern and commercial sector.
She said since August 2006, TDL has been sourcing grapes solely from Dodoma to make its Overmeer wine brand which is the first international brand made in Tanzania.
The new wine is in three variants - red, white and natural sweet. She said that with technical and extension farming knowledge provided by TDL, Dodoma has re-established the grapes agro - industry, and is becoming an important partner in grape growing area in the country.
According to the National Sales Manager, Mr Joseph Chibehe, TDL will also embark on helping farmers by providing grape seedlings as well as engaging in farming activities to ensure a transfer of skills, increasing capacity and promoting additional job opportunities in the region.
He said that local wine farmers have continued to receive training by experts from South Africa, on new techniques to help them improve the quality and yields of their grapes. Overmeer which is one of the TDL wine has become a very popular brand making excellent taste.
