Nigeria: Facilitating Electoral Participation of Purdah Women (1)

Osogbo — In a bid to boost the political participation of women, especially those in seclusion (purdah) in the forthcoming electoral processes in the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently embarked on advocacy drive to some traditional rulers and religious leaders. The intent was to get them to prevail on their subjects and members of the congregations in ensuring effective participation in the electoral processes.

One of such advocacy drive organised in partnership with the Federation of Muslim Women's Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) took the INEC officials and women organisations to the palace of Oluwo-in-council in the ancient town of Iwo, Osun State. Witnessing the advocacy sensitisation and mobilisation was a large turnout of Muslim women from across the 30 local councils in the state.
