Nairobi — One of the great innovations of painting took place between 1907 and 1914 in a series of dingy Parisian studios.... the creation of Cubism.

Its inventors were Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They worked out the technique of deconstructing and reassembling their subjects with such commonplace themes as still life (often using the guitar and the violin as metaphors for the female body) the human figure and landscape.
