In the light of the recent bomb blast that has seen loss of lives and destruction of properties, Sen. Bala Mohammed has put in motion plethora of ideas to forestall any recurrence of this new pestilence thus ensuring Abuja's relative low crime rate.
The FCT minister has brought a surplus of achievements that remain unprecedented in the Federal Capital Territory; this is as result of his willpower, ability and visualisation for recording success; also for the improvement, heightening and elevation of the socio-economic situations of the FCT and its inhabitants.
Security status in Abuja may not be wholly bereft of crime with the new addition of bomb blast by some mendacious faceless individuals, but it is also right to say that the FCT remains the safest place in Nigeria, and the FCT administration under Bala's distinguished leadership has ensured that crime waves have been contracted to one digit.
Ironically, the information on crime obtainable at the security department is suggestive of a major decline in crime under this present administration, even with the recent security challenges.
Bala's administration is determined not to rest on its oars until crime completely diminishes to the barest minimum.
The FCT administration, more than ever has made security as one of its strategic and major concerns as such it is a zero tolerance for crime in the Federal Capital City (FCC).
As part of Senator Bala Mohammed's arrangement to secure the FCC; he ensured that some security intervention squads were further reinforced and boosted. The Abuja
Crime Control Squad (ACCOS) was formed to help in restricting crime within the territory by way of intelligence gathering, physical patrol, raiding and arresting criminals. Its membership cuts across the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, military, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and Civil Defense Corps.
The ACCOS has recorded commendable achievements that include but are not constrained to, the recovery of over 370 stolen cars, arrest of vicious armed robbers numbering over 450, rapid response to 600 distress calls, which fell under house to house robbery, conducted raid in various locations of Abuja. The recovery of over 1000 bags of Indian hemp through raids at Garki, Nyanya, Utako and Ruga, prevention of religious disturbance and students unrest, the placing of surveillance and guards at all black spots in Abuja - Area 1 flyover, Utako, Berger flyover, Gudu, Nyanya and Abuja Central Area.
In addition to taking control of all major junctions in Abuja, and this will be broadened to include surveillance for suspicious persons that may want to carry out bomb blast.
The Metropolitan Policing was launched on May 2008 by previous FCT administration, the Metropolitan Policing is a water tight securitynetwork scheme that comprises 65 patrol vehicles fully equipped with communication gadgets and other related security accessories, recently Bala Mohammed boosted it with a donation of over 15
Hilux trucks to enhance its modus operandi; its aim is chiefly the patrol of the Federal Capital City metropolis and to systematically eradicate crime to the lowest indices, thus further improving the protection of lives and properties of the residents.
In objectification of the overpowering importance of safe guarding the lives and properties of the Diplomatic Missions in the FCC, Bala has increased security patrols for foreign missions in the FCT.
This has since been adhered to and its operation and control is under the purview of the Inspector General of Police. The ACCOS and Metropolitan Police have been inculcated by the FCT minister to support in securing the embassies.
The minister clearly understands the significance of community policing and as such has ensured that the FCT administration is actively involved with community and neighborhood associations to make it possible for the FCTA, Police and residents to be partners in facilitating and improving the safety of lives and properties, and also realising that only a versatile strategy will bring about the much-needed result in the fight against crime; the FCT minister set up three intervention committees; Anti-car snatching, Coordinating Security Committee for FCT Area Councils and FCT Security Coordinating Committee.
It is very imperative to note that the FCT administration has developed an immediate Security Network involving states that share common boundaries with the FCT, to re-enforce its crime and security surveillance.
Mohammed Ibro, 13, Adisa Estate, Abuja.
