Nigeria: Phases of National Association of Nigerian Students

analysis

Lagos — If recent condemnations, developments and reactions by various students' bodies over alleged unbecoming activities of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), are issues to go by, then the union may have lost face with students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria as a coordinating national body for students' unionism.

There have been concerns in certain quarters over allegations that Nigerian students' movement has lost the vibrancy with which it was formerly known for. These range from allegations of giving awards to politicians and businessmen to issuing out statements in support of one politician or party. Critics insist that these developments are complete deviation from the ideals of pressure group the past NANS leadership was known for as the official mouthpiece of the Nigerian students and last hope for the masses of this country.
