There is no doubt that the dredging of river Niger is one single project which suffered serious neglect and postponements more than any project of its kind in the history of Nigeria. The plan to dredge the river and provide for inland navigation was first conceived by the British colonial masters, but they could not execute the project up to the time they left after Nigeria gained its independence.
