Nigeria: April Polls - Court Stops Order of Election

An Abuja Federal High Court yesterday declared that the National Assembly lacks the powers to fix or determine the order of the April 2011 general elections.

Delivering judgment in a suit filed by the Labour Party, seeking an order to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the elections in the order it has set out in its timetable as provided for in the 2010 electoral act, Justice Ibrahim Auta ruled that the powers to fix the sequence of elections lies with the electoral body.
