Kenya: Old Town Beaches Sinking in Muck, Says Fishermen

Fishermen in Mombasa's Old Town have accused the government for the appalling state of the beach and the fishing sector. The National Environmental Management Aothourity, they said, has failed to ensure cleanliness of the beach."The Fisheries Ministry did well to establish Beach Management Units, but that is just that, a name only. There are no funds and we cannot do projects," said Adil Ahmed, Old Town BMU secretary.

Fisheries minister Amason Kingi admitted that the fishing industry at the Coast has been neglected for a long time. He said focus has been on inland waters as opposed to the Indian Ocean.
