In the last four years, Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Olusegun Demuren, has led a quiet revolution in Nigeria's civil aviation sector, turning what was once the butt of jokes in the international aviation community to a prestigious Category I nation. Gone are the days when Nigerian airlines flew "coffins" as aircraft.

In their place now are new, high tech airplanes, with many more on order. A hard-won legislation and autonomy have not only strengthened the hand of the apex regulators but have also won the approval of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), U.S; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and other global aviation bodies. Under the gaze of these aviation bodies, NCAA has continued to enforce a strict regime of standards in certification, licensing and training. Demuren has also been credited for stimulating the once dormant downstream part of the sector with the introduction of the Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP).
