Kenya: Europe Day Celebrated in Nairobi

On May 9, 1950, Frenchman Robert Schuman made a declaration of a united Europe that would lay the ground for a united stable and peaceful Europe. The Schuman Day later came to be known as Europe Day across the European Union countries.

Europe Day was celebrated in Kenya on Friday at the EU ambassador's residence in Muthaiga, Nairobi. The event hosted by the recently appointed EU head of delegation, Dutch-born Lodewijk Briet, who presented his credentials to President Kibaki in February. He was thus hosting his first Europe Day in Kenya. The event was attended by many ambassadors and high commissioners from within the EU and outside the continent. There was also a delegation from the Kenyan government with Public Health minister Prof Anyang Nyong'o making an appearance.
