Nigeria: ICPC And Endemic Corruption in LGs

The tacit submission made recently by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) that unbridled corrupt practices are very high in local government councils across the country is well taken. But it is an old story which is well known to every sensible Nigerian.

What is disturbing, however, is the intriguing absence of the political will on the part of the various anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Code of Conduct Bureau and the ICPC itself (not to talk of the Nigeria Police Force ) to curb the ugly trend. In a lecture titled: "The Need for the Establishment of Anti-Corruption, Transparency and Monitoring Units in Local Government Areas", head of the Planning, Research and Review Department of the ICPC, Kennedy Ebhotemen, observed that although the anti-graft agency was yet to indict any local council official, acts of corruption were alarming at the local government councils.
