Tanzania: Parliament Must Pressurise Govt to Raise Minimum Pension

On Budget Day, June 8, there was an eye-catching front-page story in the popular Kiswahili daily, Mwananchi, in which the first Chief of Defence Forces of Tanzania Gen (rtd) Mrisho Sarakikya said he was appalled at the fact that, upon retirement, he was getting a pension of Sh50,000 after many years of public service.

He said he only managed to put up a small house ("kibanda") for the family, while he could see that some public servants owned mansions in various towns in the country that were outrageously out of proportion with their incomes.
