Kenya: Community Challenges Laikipia Evictions

Members of the Leikiji community who were evicted from a ranch in Nanyuki last week are challenging their eviction in court. They want the court to grant them orders restricting the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Police and two ranch owners, Christopher and Nigel Trent, from harassing, oppressing, subjecting them to violence or forceful eviction until their case has been heard and determined.

While asking Judge Anyara Emukule to declare their suit as urgent, lawyer Simon Nzioka who is acting for the community told the court that the residents have occupied the land for more than 20 years, and built permanent houses on it.
