Nigeria: Nupe Day Kicks Off

The third Nupe Day kicks off today in Lapai with a lecture to be delivered by Niger State governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu at the IBB University, Lapai. His lecture is entitled "Democracy and Development of Nupeland".

On Saturday, there will be a Race Course Foundation-laying and Fundraising, a ceremony for the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar. It will take place at Kilometre 10, Chegungi Wuya Road, Bida.

The event will be followed by the Nupe Day Entertainment Industry awards and Cultural Night which will involve honouring some distinguished musicians, actors and actresses of Nupe extraction and display of the finest Nupe culture.

Historically, the essence of Nupe Day is derived from the zeal displayed on June 26, 1896, by Etsu Bubakari of Bida, who was the first among Fulani emirate rulers to engage in battles with the British colonialists, when they first surfaced around Lokoja high waters for the subsequent colonisation of Northern emirates from Bida through Kontagora.

The grand finale of the 3rd Nupe Day annual festival slated for Sunday is a festival adopted by people of the race to recreate the substance of Nupe's excellent cultural values such as humility, decorum, family bond and consistent obedience to rightfully constituted authorities. The positive aspects of communalism, including partnership in farming, industrial pursuits, dialogue and hunting are displayed to mark the day.

Activities to mark the grand finale of the event on Sunday will also include conferment of traditional titles on, and presentation of merit award to, distinguished personalities from different walks of life and cultural shows.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo will grace the occasion as special guest of honour while the former president, General Ibrahim Babangida, will chair the occasion.

One of the prominent sons of Nupe that Etsu Nupe will confer a traditional title is the chairman and editor-in-chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, who will become Kakaki Nupe.

Others to receive traditional titles include a former Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki, as Sardauna Raya Kasa Nupe; Barrister Abraham Ndana Yisa as Galadima Alkalai Nupe; Dr Peter S. Nmadu as Wakili Magani Nupe; Alhaji Nma Abubakar as Marwan Nupe; Ambassador Solomon Yisa as Etan Nupe; Captain Abubakar Isah Mokwa, as Wakili Nupe and Alhaji Muh'd Zubairu Kolo as Kpako Nupe.
