Rwanda: Lightning Kills Three Children

Nyabihu — Lightening Sunday afternoon struck in Bigogwe sector in Nyabihu District killing three children and injuring ten.The deceased were identified as Yvonne Uwineza, 11, Eric Habineza, 4, and innocent Tuyiringire, 9.

"It was drizzling and there was a large group of children who had gathered to look at a truck that was loading sand when the lightning struck," said Angelle Mukaminani, the district Vice Mayor in charge of finance and economic development.

By yesterday, seven of the injured had been discharged from Ikora clinic, while one had been transferred to Musanze main hospital because his condition could not be handled at this clinic.

Two were still admitted at the clinic by press time."They sustained serious body burns while others have swollen stomachs and other injuries," added Mukaminani.

The vice mayor said that it was a surprise because lightning is not a usual occurrence in Nyabihu but she advised parents to always stop children from going out in the rain.
