Uganda: Create Jobs Out of Demand for Houses

opinion

One of the major factors in determining real estate prices is the cost of cement. In Uganda, we have two leading cement factories of Tororo and Hima. In 2009, the total output for the two factories was 1,162,241 metric tons while imported cement accounted for 566,082 tons. Our local manufacturers exported 390,476 tons into the regional market. (Ubos 2010)

Today, a 50kilogramme bag of cement goes for Shs26,000 in many retail outlets around Kampala. For an ordinary man, this is far too high for a product whose raw materials are all locally sourced. This has created a big deficit in Uganda's housing sector, forcing many people to live in unsafe nests.
