Kenya: Enforcing International Law Will Help Fight Graft, Drug Trade

The extradition case facing two prominent Kenyan citizens Chris Okemo, Member of Parliament and former managing director, Kenya Power and Lighting Company Samuel Gichuru is a watershed proof and recognization that to get ahead of determined and well-resourced transnational criminal networks, it is becoming increasingly important to step up joint efforts to coordinate and cooperate better amongst the countries and build effective international and regional law enforcement networks to dismantle proceeds of crime.

International Center for Policy and Conflict insists that any effective anti-crime effort must vigorously attack heart of corruption. The Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) of 2003 has globalized the fight against corruption. It provides both a framework and tools for States, individually and collectively, to attack-both corrupt officials and those who corrupt them-to deny them the fruits of their unlawful activities, and to take steps to deter corruption in the first place. The challenge now is for the government of Kenya to promote and support effective implementation of these measures.
