Kenya: MPs Plan to Take Over Delayed Legislative Bills

Parliament is considering taking over the responsibility of drafting the legislative bills required to implement the new constitution. Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee chairman Abdikadir Mohamed and Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara say the move follows the executive's delay to publish some crucial bills.

Abdikadir says Parliament was contemplating the move as it bears the consequences if required bills are not passed within the stipulated time. "It is the executive which has the role to formulate the bills through the line ministries, AG and Kenya Law Review Commission (KLRC)," he said. "However parliament will suffer the consequences if the bills are not enacted in time and that's why we will take over."
