Uganda: Passengers Petition Mayor Over Taxi Fares

Kampala — Passengers under their umbrella association Passengers Protection Unit (PPU), have petitioned the Lord Mayo, Mr Erias Lukwago, demanding that the city authority fixes public transport fares.

Presenting the petition to Mr Lukwago at City Hall yesterday, the PPU Chairman, Mr Andrew Irumba, said commuter taxis were charging different fares in the morning , afternoon and evening. He also accused taxi drivers and conductors of using vulgar words. "As passengers, we want Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to set transport fares across the city. The new transport contract should cater for the passengers as well," Mr Irumba said adding: "We want transport fares made public so that commuter taxi drivers cannot exploit us anymore".
