Kenya: Emulate Malawi Miracle to End Hunger

Reports that Kenya will be importing maize from Malawi should shame our government into action. Malawi is a much smaller economy than Kenya. It is one of the world's poorest and most densely populated in the world. Four years ago, almost half of its population depended on food aid from abroad for survival. Malawi is now not only able to feed itself, but can even export maize to hard-pressed neighbours including Kenya.

The Malawi miracle did not happen overnight, but occurred through a deliberate policy by the government which launched a massive nationwide programme to subsidise fertilizer and maize seeds to small farmers. Yields were doubled two years into the programme and the GDP grew. The 'miracle' can be and must be replicated in Kenya if we are to bring an end to the annual circus of seeing our leaders always with a begging bowl asking donors for food aid.
