The issue of Nigerians serving in various prisons across the globe took the centre stage on Tuesday at the Senate chambers through a bill seeking the transfer of convicted offenders in foreign prisons back to Nigeria prisons.
A staggering number of 16,000 Nigerian prisoners serving in the United Kingdom were disclosed to the Senate. This is clear evidence that the issue is indeed a serious one as the numbers involved have reached a critical mass. The Nigerian government and our embassies have rightly identified this trend as a major problem in recent months, but they seem to be tackling it in a wrong way.
