Uganda: Replace Owino's Makeshift Stalls With Solid Structures

Barely two years after Owino Market was destroyed by fire, another fire outbreak burnt down the popular city market on Sunday, destroying property worth millions. The cause of the fire still remains a mystery, just like the 2009 incident that was not conclusively investigated.

The fire, which is thought to have started in the wee hours of Sunday morning, took fire fighters close to seven hours to put out. The same can be said of the 2009 fire where fire fighters failed to come to the rescue of traders on time, despite being close to the market. In the Sunday case, it was reported that fire trucks kept running out of water! There are various issues contributing to these market fires, particularly Owino but measures can be taken to avoid them.
