Uganda: Kampalans Continue to Shun Local Athletics

Just how frustrating is it to win a race and celebrate alone? "Very frustrating, it is not motivating at all," national sprinter Mildred Gamba gave a precious answer after winning two medals (100m gold and 200m silver) during the National Championships held a fortnight ago (July 23-24) at Namboole.

But it's something Ugandan runners have come to terms with especially while competing in Kampala. The National Championships, which produced some sublime performances with steeplechaser Jacob Araptany stealing the show, was watched by less than 30 fans on average over the two days. It has been the case in past few years; athletics competitions held in Kampala don't attract crowds, however big.
