There has been a lot of debate over the rationale behind the privatisation of airports. Critics argue that given the importance of airport infrastructure, private players would overcharge and exploit the public.

On the other hand, proponents of privatisation argue, because of poorly managed public airports. Further, that privatisation also brings in much needed capital and the efficiency introduced by market forces. However, governments across the world have been careful to prevent market failure by actively regulating airports.
