Projects which ought to have been completed two years ago in the Satellite towns are still unfinished, creating a huge social divide within the FCT.
The influx of people into the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, especially people looking for white collar jobs and those willing to enjoy better social services, has over the years increased the population of the city. The artificial and somewhat natural increase in population of the city-centre brought with it high cost of living, traffic congestion, and until 2004, a rise in crime rate. People began to live in squatter settlements within the metropolitan city or close to it, while some through connivance with local chiefs, built temporary and permanent houses in areas set aside for the native people.
