Kenya: Youth in Murang'a County to Plant 2m Indigenous Trees

30 August 2011

Murang'a County plans to plant 2 million indigenous trees in the area. The four-month project is aimed at increasing forest cover and conserve the environment. The initiative will be conducted by youth groups who will work together with Mavunobora, a community-based organisation.

The organisation's chairman Eliud Macharia said they chose to plant indigenous trees because they are getting depleted. He said the trees have been cut down by the locals for charcoal burning, firewood and timbers for construction of houses. "Traditional trees species have been cut down with replacement as people look for firewood, medicine and expand agricultural land but this has been detrimental to the environment," the chairman said.
