Kenya: Society Sues to Block Cash for Handicapped

31 August 2011

A society claiming to fight for the rights of more than 3.6 million mentally handicapped people has sued the government to stop disbursement of the Sh385 million for people with disabilities. It says the government had failed to factor in the budget the needs of the mentally handicapped. The society argues that if the money is disbursed the mentally handicapped will be left out.

In its suit papers, the Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped says the government has continued to ignore the huge population of people with intellectual disability. It says the mentally handicapped need intensive therapeutic and rehabilitative support which are lifelong. But despite this they have never been allocated some of the money set aside for people with disabilities.
