Kenya: Prisoner Charged With Kiambu Teacher's Murder

A prisoner was yesterday arraigned in court to stand trial for murder of a Kiambu based teacher who died after being released from a police cell.

However Miseyeki Ole Mollel was not allowed to plead to charges because he didn't have a lawyer to represent him. The charge sheet indicates that Mollel murdered John Muturi on the night of August 14 and 15 at Kiambu County.

Lady justice Philomena Mwilu directed that the government hires a lawyer for Mollel so that he can plead to the charges. His case will come up for hearing on September 6.

Muturi had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly and died soon after his release. Relatives claim he was beaten by police at the station.
