Kenya: Leadership Lessons From the Mau Mau

How do we measure them as leaders? All those numerous hopefuls who offer themselves on every television programme for posts in the 2012 elections, or under the new Constitution. Our choices are extremely important for our future. 1963 was another such time. So was the Mau Mau period.

In early 1954, among the issues being discussed by the fighters in the forests was that of electing a Kenya central council or Parliament that would co-ordinate the leadership of the struggle, which could no longer be done from Nairobi. On the qualifications needed, one fighter said:
