Nigeria: Real Story of Kwankwaso-Bayero Feud

1 September 2011

Kano — A bitter feud is unfolding between Kano State's recently re-elected Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the powerful Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero which manifested itself in the last two days of Sallah holidays as the two sides bickered and struggled over the Emir's traditional Sallah itinerary, Daily Trust learnt in Kano yesterday.

Kano State Commissioner for Information Dr Umar Faruk Jibril had announced on Tuesday the decision of the state government to suspend altogether the series of traditional activities lined up for Sallah celebration by the Kano Emirate Council, saying this became necessary due to the Emir Ado Bayero's ill-health. His statement contradicted one made a day earlier by Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and District Head of Dala Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who said on Monday that the Hawan Nasarawa and Hawan Dorayi programs were being shelved due to the emir's ill-health but that the two, relatively lighter programs of Hawan Sallah and Hawan Daushe would go ahead. As it happened, despite the government's cancellation announcement, the emir and his council went ahead with the Hawan Sallah shortly after the Eid prayer on Tuesday. It took place at Kofar Kwaru, just behind the emir's palace, near Kano city's old mosque. Also yesterday, a very colourful Hawan Daushe durbar took place at the palace, in line with the itinerary earlier announced by the palace. Commissioner Umar Jibril had said the Hawan Sallah, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Nasarawa and Hawan Dorayi were all cancelled.
